On repeat: Los Látigos - Qué tentación

After the spending the holidays in Houston and Monterrey, I'm spending a week and a half in Boston on a part business, part personal trip, then heading back to Monterrey for a week, then moving temporarily to San Francisco. On top of that, work is picking up, so I don't expect to be writing a lot the next few weeks. (If I do post some notes, they will most likely be items I've already begun writing.) At the minimum, I'll try to keep the 'listening to' section on the right up to date, and mention any updates here. Which brings us to this post.

Los Látigos' Hombre was one of my favorite albums from 2006; last November they released Primeros Auxilios, and it was my last purchase on the day I left Buenos Aires. I only started listening to it a couple of weeks ago, and although I don't find it quite as good as Hombre, I still have a hard time not singing along to it. Check out the tracks on the right. I've also been listening to Burial's Untrue after seeing it near the top of several Best of 2007 lists and hearing one of the tunes in Thom Yorke's DJ set during the Thumbs Down webcast in November; it really has a beautiful, hypnotic and at the same time haunting quality to it that draws you in immediately and doesn't let go. Oddly, as attention-grabbing as it is, it's a great record to work to, specially at night.

2007 Party Mix

I've been jotting down notes for my 'Best of 2007' posts since November but it now seems very unlikely I may get around to them anytime soon, with all that's going on and coming up. So in the meantime, here's a little 'mix tape' with songs off of some of my favorite albums from last year. I put this together rather quickly in one evening for a party I went to a few days ago here in Monterrey, so I tried to keep the selection somewhat upbeat--meaning a few of my favorite albums (e.g., Wilco or The Bees (U.S.)) were left out. It's not exactly a 'dance' album, but I hope it will at least keep you tapping your feet at your next soirée, pounding the steering wheel while you drive or singing out loud in the shower.

¡Feliz 2008!

Finally, I just want to mention that about a year ago I added a 'hit counter' to the blog, expecting to find I had 3 or 4 visits a week; it turns out I was getting about 12 or 15 per day, for a total of almost 5500 visits during the year. About two thirds are people who arrive from Google searches, but the other third are returning visitors. If you happen to be a returning visitor, I just want to say thanks for stopping by and let you know that comments to the posts or messages in the guestbook always cheer me up. Have a great 2008!
