A few forgotten James B-sides

I Defeat (con Sinéad O'Connor)
Stolen Horse
All Good Boys
Downstairs
Wisdom of the Throat

Y una canción nueva:
Who Are You

A few days ago I found myself, like for the seventh time in my life, putting together a "subjective anthology" of James songs for a new friend who'd never heard them before and is going to the Summercase festival this year, whose lineup they're a part of. As I was going over the songs in iTunes to choose the ones that in the end would make up two CDs, there were many I hadn't listened to in a long time and had forgotten how much I'd liked, and once again was amazed by the number of "B sides" they had that I thougt were better than many of the "A sides" released by themselves (or any other artist, for that matter) and that nobody--with the exception of their die-hard fans, like yours truly--had ever listened to. I decided to place five of those songs, all of them from the Millionaires era (1999), in my "jukebox", and while I was at it, put direct links to the songs here. I suppose it's a good enough time to mention that last month saw the release of a compilation of all of James' singles, 31 in total, plus 2 new songs, one of which ("Who Are You") I've also thrown in the jukebox and below these lines, and that they're supposed to be coming out with some new stuff later this year. I've lost all hope that they'll ever get the world fame they deserve--I was *certain* that when Millionaires came out they would, well, become millionaires, but the album wasn't even a blip on anyone's radar--but on the other hand, they've failed miserably and and risen from their ashes with relative success in the past, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Some Millionaires-era B-Sides:
I Defeat (with Sinéad O'Connor)
Stolen Horse
All Good Boys
Downstairs
Wisdom of the Throat

And a new song:
Who Are You

Primavera Sound 2007

Writing a review of a festival less than three weeks after it takes place is probably a record for me. The brevity of my comments are probably the reason this was done so fast.

The Primavera Sound music festival is, I believe, one of the older festivals in Spain, or at least one of the more established ones (more so in these days when there seems to be one every weekend). Judging by the line-up and the sponsors, this is--as most European summer festivals are--an "indie" festival. (That word has become so contrived.) It's in Barcelona, and the more recent editions have been held at El Parc del Fórum, a seaside park that is probably the best festival location I've been to, a far cry from the usual dusty parking lot with tents. It's ample, easily accessible by inner-city light rail, one of the stages has the Mediterranean right behind it; it was also nice to see that the organizers realize that the number of adults who don't stop listening to contemporary popular music is continuously rising, making it easy fo rthem to come woth their kids to the festicval; I don't remember seeing strollers or babies on shoulders at festivals before. My only real complaint is that sometimes the sound of one of the stages could be heard at another, on one occasion driving Damon Albarn to pull his hat over his head and dropping to his knees in frustration. The other thing is that cramming over 100 bands into three nights leads to inevitable overlaps and prevents your from catching a number of shows.

Me perdí a Herman Düne, The Melvins, Dirty Three, Fujiya & Miyagi, y Justice.

This year it was held between May 31st and June 2nd--that would be Thursday thru Saturday nights. The night of main attractions was probably Thursday. The Smashing Pumpkins reunited and put on a great show, despite not having toured in like seven years, playing some old favorites and showcasing some pretty good new songs. (An oddity here is that the only original member in the band besides Billy Corgan is Jimmy Chamberlin, who was also in Zwan with Corgan, so, what makes The Pumpkins The Pumpkins?). The White Stripes also combined songs off their new record, Icky Thump with older, better-known stuff, and were also an amazing show. Before them, Slint also returned from the grave to play Spiderland in its entirety, Comets on Fire played Blue Cathedral, I caught a glimpse of Fennesz and Mike Patton piercing people's eardrums, and discovered Parenthetical Girls. Missed Herman Düne, The Melvins, Dirty Three, Fujiya & Miyagi, and Justice.

Me perdí a Band of Horses, Low, Barry Adamson, Chromeo, Maxïmo Park, y al Sr. Chinarro.

Saturday was a bit weak, but Spiritualized's beutiful performance made it worth it. It was in the Auditori, a great concert hall right outside the Fórum grounds; Jason Spaceman was accompanied by his band, a gospel choir and a string quarted and everything sounded just perfect. Earlier I got a close-up of Los Planetas playing an unplugged set at MySpace's tent, later I saw most of Beirut's performance--which was OK but not as great I was hoping after having fell so hard for their song "Mount Wroclai (Idle Days)"--, saw a bit of Modest Mouse, caught all of Built to Spill's show, and closed the night dancing to Hot Chip and Luke Slater. (Did I mention ther were two stages that only had DJs spinning dance tracks?) Missed Band of Horses, Low, Barry Adamson, Chromeo, Maxïmo Park, and Sr. Chinarro.

The Good, The Bad and The Queen estuvieron bien, pero bueno, nunca me enganché por completo a su disco tampoco. Me perdí a múm.

Sunday was a bit better. I only listened to two or three of Patti Smith's songs off her new covers album--wasn't interested in the studio versions either--, and similarly, I only caught two or three of Sonic Youth's songs, who were apparently playing Daydream Nation in full. The highlight of the night was Wilco, whose performance I've already written a bit about previously here. The Good, The Bad and The Queen were OK, but then again, I never really warmed up to their album. It was fun watching Architecture in Helsinki playing while there was still daylight, and odd listening to Buzzcocks's rants about anarchy as if they were 20-year olds. The Durutti Column was great, despite having a lot more singing going on than I expected. Pelican were also really good; I'd only listened to an EP Chuy lent me a few years back, and it was a little heavy for my taste; they seem to have moved more towards an >Explosions in the Sky-type sound, I have to check out their new stuff. Battles did a good job closing the live part of the festival, covering for Klaxons, who were cancelled without further explanations.

Of Montreal and a few other bands played on Sunday in a briefer session, but I didn't show up for that. All in all, it was a nice experience, but I'm expecting to have a better time later this year at the Summercase and Benicàssimm festivals. And I don't expect to go to so many festivals in a single season ever again.

Chemical Brothers' new album online

The Pills Won't Help You."

The Chemical Brothers have posted We Are the Night, their 6th studio album, in its entirety on their MySpace page, http://www.myspace.com/thechemicalbrothers. As usual, it includes a number of respectable guest singers; among them in this edition is Midlake's singer Tim Smith, lending his voice to "The Pills Won't Help You." The CD is out in Europe on July 17th and probably the next day in the U.S.

Album Commentary: Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Black Wave/Bad Vibration/Ocean of Noise
Intervention
Keep the Car Running
No Cars Go
The Arcade Fire
Neon Bible

This review has been long in the coming. Released in early March, it was ceratainly one of the most anticipated releases of this year, after universal praise blanketed Funeral, their debut CD from 2004. Sophomore releases are always used to gauge the "true talent" of bands with succesful debuts, and Neon Bible has come to show Funeral was no accident. Although it took me two or three weeks to warm up to it, it has easily become my favorite record released this year so far--and the first half of this year has already seen the release of many more better albums than the full of 2006 did. Shit, I've actually payed twice (once on-line, then again for the disc) for at least three records this year already. But that'll be the topic of another entry.

Where to begin? Should I just say that I don't remember ever seeing a CD released to so many 5-star reviews, April's Q even going as far as naming it "record of the year" (in the first quarter!)? Or that the "Hit Emocional" comic strip in April's Rockdelux--which usually deals with a song from decades past and the impact it had in the cartoonist's life--for the first time was about a song on a CD fresh out of the factory? Or should I just repeat what I said when I reviewed Funeral: not since the days of James had I heard music that was this cathartic? Because this is a record I can listen to once and again and still get excited about it. I've always said I am more a "melody person" than a "lyrics person", but there's a factor that's not related to music or words I keep forgetting: "emotion", and it's probably what pulls me in the most into a song. There's a world of difference between listening to someone with a nice voice hit the right notes, and forgetting who you are to become the person behind the speakers.

As I said before, this wasn't one of those records that pulled me in the first time I listened to it. One thing I couldn't wrap my head around was why it sounded somewhat muffled, as if not much care were taken at the production and mixing stages. And even now I wonder if it would feel different if the sound were brighter, but maybe this is the sound they were going for, one that wasn't too polished, forcing the songs to rely on the compositions themselves. Maybe Arcade Fire are in that sweet spot where they're old enough to know but young enough to not care. They've certainly matured since Funeral, displaying much richer arrangements and tackling heavier themes, but they're still naive enough to sing like affected teenagers in "Black Wave" or say things like "I know a place / where no cars go".

The music is at times intense, sometimes bombastic, occasionally spiritual, but always beautiful and moving. I supppose Funeral may have a handful of tracks that could be considered better than any song on Neon Bible, but it also has greater valleys. Bible is much more consistent, in the quality of the songs, in its themes and in how it's strung together. I suppose I could go on writing a paragraph for each song, pulling them apart in search of all their musical and lyrical nuances, but I wouldn't be able to do them justice. Again, their biggest strength lies in the emotions their music ignites. The best example of all of the above can be found, I believe, in the suite composed by "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations", what would seem to be two songs placed into one track on the record; because I like how they flow into "Ocean of Noise" so much--they are easily the three songs I've listened to the most this year--I've made a single track with all three songs for the purposes of this blog.

The average price of the CD in Spain is around 18 euros, so buying it in iTunes for 10 bucks was a no-brainer. After listening to it so much, I ended up shelling out close to 25 euros for the "special edition", which includes an animated neon bible on the front and a couple of flipbooks inside. I also liked the fact that the type and presentation they used for the lyrics is the same as used in most bibles.

A few years back I read an article on Radiohead that said they were "weird, arrogant, earnest, and beautiful--what all great rock bands should be". I don't know much about Arcade Fire's arrogance, but if we replace that item in the list with the not-too-dissimilar ambitious, they certainly fit the description of a geat band.

Eye am much better now, thanks for asking!

A couple of people have asked me about my eye this week. I'm glad to inform that I went for a check-up on Tuesday and the doctor told me I had "miraculously recovered completely in record time", specially if you take into account I only took the medicines she prescribed for less than two weeks, rather than two months. One of the pills was supposed to help me drain liquids from my body and the other to restore some of the minerals (e.g., potassium) that got lost in the process, but the first, which I was supposed to take every morning, was giving me this very intense and unpleasant tingling sensation in my fingers, feet and lips; the other, theoretically taken every night before I went to bed, was making my stomach burn and preventing me from getting a good night's sleep. The real prescription, though, was to take it easy, avoid stress and rest well, and the drugs were the only thing preventing me from achieving that state of coolness. (Ok, maybe I haven't been getting as much rest I should the last few weeks, but the fact that these recent all-nighters have been for play instead of work probably makes up for the missing hours of sleep!)

Quick entry to avoid the blog from rusting. Been travelling a bit the last couple of weeks, and as always, that comes with more things to write about but less time to do it. I have a bunch of notes and CD Reviews and songs ready (or almost ready) to be posted, I just have trouble wrapping them up. So in the meantime, I'll just share this video that Mario, one of my best friends, shared with me a week or two ago. I'd never really listened to M. Ward, just heard about him, and--very entertaining video aside--I really liked the tone, pace, lyrics and sound of this song. I was intrigued by the spacious reverb he applied to his voice and instruments, giving them a somewhat "early days of rock'n'roll" sound (think Sun Studios in the 50s). Then I saw the name of the album this song is on was Post-War, and as much as I wish it meant it had been released with our current wars behind us, I've come to accept he's probably referring to the music of the Post-(World) War (II) era.

OK, so music may be my radar and all, but I am beginning to realize I may be taking things a little too far. I was at the Primavera Sound festival this weekend in Barcelona--a brief summary and some crappy cell phone pictures coming soon to this blog--and on Saturday evening, the last day of the event, I was at one point thinking of Chuy, Ciro and Charlie, three of my best friends and fellow music lovers who host the Eufonía radio show in Mexico, and thinking of all the bands I was watching live I knew they liked and have never seen (The Durutti Column, múm, Pelican, Los Planetas, Architecture in Helsinki, The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Sonic Youth, Spritualized, Wilco, The White Stripes, The Smashing Pumpkins...) and how cool it would be if any of them could be there next year. Although The Battles closed the live band presentations (covering for The Klaxons who were MIA) with a very high energy, fast-paced, mathematically precise post-rock set, it was the last band to play on the largest stage, Wilco that really made my night. Watching Jeff Tweedy and their now-permanent other-main-guitarist Nels Cline interplay is something every guitar-loving music fan has to witness at least once; I was genuinely moved.

This morning (more like 2pm, actually), I woke up soon after a silly dream, and I only wish I could remember more of it, but as we all know, dreams have this nasty habit of avoiding the part of our brains where memories are kept, so if you don't permanently register whatever you may still recall immediately after waking up, consider it lost for good. All I can recall is that I was at this sort of convention center where a music festival was taking place, and besides the three dudes I mentioned earlier, another of my best friends and frequent festival attendee, Celia, was also there. But Chuy, Ciro and Charlie had a stand or something (to promote their show, maybe?) and couldn't go to the shows. So there I was, almost in tears, asking Ciro how it was possible that he had not only missed the Tweedy/Cline display the night before, but had also missed every single one of the daily presentations of Paul McCartney with Les Claypool! (Only goes to show that, yes, in dreams, anything is possible.)
