New music this week

Back from a handful of nice days (and nights!) in New York. This week the new R.E.M. and Moby albums hit the shelves. Although R.E.M. has suffered a lot of backlash since the departure of Bill Berry over 10 years ago because of their tendencies towards pop, synthesizers and drum and effect machines, I personally *love* their post-Berry albums; I might take a beating myself for saying this, but, to me, the last 6 songs on Up is probably the most beautiful suite of songs they ever placed back-to-back on a single album. So I was worried this new record, announced as a rawer, more traditional rock-sounding collection, would be disappointing (like, say, Monster or New Adventures in Hi-Fi.) It's not; it's quite good, actually. It is comprised mostly of guitars, bass and drums, but Michael Stipe's layering of his own voice makes up for all the missing instruments and effects. As far as Moby's album goes, yeah, I was at his listening party last week, but with all the simultaneous conversations going on, I could barely hear the album. Below is the video of the first single off the record; I know the guy's a vegan and can understand he'd try to get his message out in his videos, but something about the song and the images just don't mix. Here's hoping this isn't the best song on the record.

OK, *one* post from NY...

On Tuesday afternoon I saw a bulletin from Moby in my iLike sidebar that had a link to an email address that said "Write to win a pair of tickets to an exclusive listening party of Moby's new album, Last Night, on Wednesday, March 27." I thought, that's tomorrow night, and I'll be in NY, so what the heck? I clicked on the link and sent the email. When I checked my email on Wednesday afternoon in NY, I had an email saying I was on the guestlist for the party, to be held at the Rubin Museum of Art. So I went, and lo and behold, there was the grandson of Herman Melville himself, hanging out with the crowd, while his record was playing in the background. Pretty cool, more so because it was so unexpected!

This week in music

After a an unusual stretch of great concerts (The Pigeon Detectives at Popscene on Thursday, Explosions in the Sky at The Great American Music Hall on Friday, Jens Lekman at Bimbo's 365 on Saturday and Vampire Weekend at Rickshaw Stop on Sunday), work picked up speed on Monday, preventing me from going to see Beth Orton that night and writing about the shows or this week's releases. This post was actually written on a flight to New York, where I'll be spending the next few days in Manhattan for work and visiting Brooklyn for the first time over the weekend.

Every one of the shows I went to deserves its own post, but as time (and battery life) are limited, I'll just briefly touch on some new releases I feel are worth mentioning--and some that are not. This week saw the release of Guillemots' Red, which I'm listening to and liking. Daniel Lanois put out his Here Is What Is movie/CD bundle, which I've been listening to and isn't bad, but would probably be better appreciated as a film experience--or maybe not; judging from the sound bytes on the CD, I'm afraid it could be a bit of a drag. Not so new but also in heavy rotation this week are Charlatans' You Cross My Path and Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut, which I got hooked on after their show last weekend. From the "so new they're not even out yet" department, I've been listening to R.E.M.'s Accelerate (already singing along to 3 or 4 songs on the record), and M83's Saturdays=Youth, not as engaging but not bad.

Before signing off until next week, I just want to express my disappointment with Morrissey for releasing another "Greatest Hits" record, and would like to invite readers to send suggestions on how to reconcile this weak offering with these lyrics he wrote back in 1987:

Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

Best of! Most of!
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves!
Buy both, and feel deceived

"Trackbacking"

A modest blogger like myself is always excited when another blog makes a reference to his own, and in the last few weeks that's happened tome a couple of times. Sherilyn Connelly wrote in her online diary that "a guy that looks like a young Leonard Cohen" said he'd liked her Bad Movie night film descriptions, and Jordi Fernandez, a Catalan (what else?), wrote in his online travel journal he met a Mexican-American with a Los Planetas t-shirt at the Jens Lekman concert. The picture of him with the cute bass player was taken by yours truly. (He later returned the favor by taking a picture of me with Jens, but none of us look particularly handsome in it...)

This Week's New Music Releases

I wanted to post at least three reviews this week but haven't been able to get around to them: Merz's Moi et mon camion, Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid, and Portishead's 3. The first two were released this week and Portishead's comes out next month. As a stand-in for the reviews, I'll leave you with a the videos of the first single off of each album. Merz's song is easily my first 5-star song of this year; I've been listening to it almost constantly since November and can't seem to get tired of it. Elbow's is allright, but not the best song on the record; same goes for Portishead's. This week also saw the release of new records from Gnarls Barkley, Daniel Lanois, and the odd re-release of Bravery's The Sun and the Moon, with a 2nd CD with new versions of all the same songs they released last year. Not sure why they did this, specially since the new ones aren't better. Finally, I got my hands on a new Four Tet EP called Ringer that will be released next month and I've really been enjoying; a nice balance of his older, more sample-based stuff and his newer, more synth-based stuff.

Merz - Presume Too Much

Elbow - Grounds for Divorce

Portishead - Machine Gun

Music forecast for 2008 is looking good...

It seems like we're in for a long run of great releases week after week that should stretch over several months. March 17 sees the release of Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid (which I've been listening to non-stop for the last week or so, expect a review soon), Merz's Moi et mon camion (a song off this record has been the background record on my MySpace page for the last 3 or 4 months), Daniel Lanois releases Here Is What Is and Muse put out Haarp, last year's Wembley concert, in both CD and DVD (see preview at the end of this post.) On March 24 Guillemots give us Red and Supergrass present Diamond Hoo Ha. On March 31 R.E.M. return with Accelerate and Moby tells about Last Night.

April 7 will see James' comeback with Hey Ma, and Gnarls Barkley will use The Odd Couple as an excuse to keep dressing up as famous couples. On April 14, after *11* years, Portishead reemerge with their Third album, and M83 release Saturdays. The Delays' Everything's the Rush is released on April 28, as well as Jamie Lidell's Jim.

On May 13 we should be getting Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs, and just a week later we should be getting our hands on Coldplay's Prospekt. Later in May we'll get a new record from Spiritualized, Songs in A&E.

Then there's the slew of bands who have already spent months, if not years, preparing their next releases, and hopefully we'll be able to listen to in the summer or fall: U2, The Cure, The Verve, Franz Ferdinand, Echo and the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, Doves, Mogwai, and Sigur Ros, who I'm excited to hear is working with Flood, one of my all-time favorite producers, who's helmed or collaborated on many of my favorite albums from U2, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Charlatans, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, and Goldfrapp's latest, Seventh Tree.

Friday fun (Film Festivals in SF)

I've only been here a little over a month, and I swear this city has hosted a minimum of 4 movie festivals already: the Independent Film Festival, the Irish Film Festival, the Asian-American Film Festival, and the Tiburon International Film Festival (well, not exactly San Francisco, but just across the bay); and I'm probably forgetting one or two. I also saw an ad for a yearly "Big Lebowski" party at some bowling alley, where people go dressed as their favorite character from that classic Coen Brothers movie. But reading a local paper the other day I noticed a 'permanent' festival of sorts: The weekly Bad Movie Night, with a changing theme every month. March is the "Lead and Testosterone Poisoning Reagan-Era Hyper-Violence", with movies starring Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Bronson, Chuck Norris and Patrick Swayze (WTF?). Even if you can't make it to the movie, the website is pretty entertaining in itself, specially their two-line movie summaries.

And then... patterns

On Wednesday morning, when I took them out for breakfast, I was surprised to find a pattern similar to polka dots on the inside of the plastic over the hollow space in the middle, produced by some strange mix of evaporation and condensation. Whatever it was, it looked cool.

New Charlatans album, gratis

Vanity o You Cross My Path.

Another example of the strange times we're in regarding how music is delivered: The Charlatans have made their most recent album available as a free download from the xfm site, no strings attached. If you like the band, go get it; if you don't know (or remember) who they are, check out Oh! Vanity or You Cross My Path. If you know who they are and have never really liked them, this won't change anything.
