The Parting Glass

"Good things don't last"

And so it goes. In the end I grew attached. As I wandered away from the avenues under which the subways run, that I became acquainted with the perimetric barrios and their popular fairs, that I got to know the museums and the clubs and the local bands and the downtown pizza shops and the record stores on Corrientes, that I got a little more involved in my environment, everything seemed more lovely. I started feeling I needed to come back soon, that I still had lots to see... and then I remembered that's exactly what I started feeling as I left Valencia, which happens to be twelve times smaller and where I spent twelve times as much time. So, it's back to the original tentative plan.

Album Commentary: Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Seventh Tree

"Utopia" is one of those tracks I'll never forget the first time I heard; I was at the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysees when it started playing on the video screens and I just had to find out who it was. I bought Felt Mountain then and there and after listening to the first track I was rather excited with having found a band that had a relatively fresh and unique sound. Then when Black Cherry came out, I was blown away because it was a radical change in sound, towards raw-er synths and raunchier sounds, and although the sound and tone of the album was very different from the first one, the sound of the band was still there, making my admiration grow, and inevitably making me look forward to what they would do "next". And what they did was disappoint me by not surpising me at all. Supernature was a repetition of the Black Cherry sound, but without as many good songs. Granted, there were two or three catchy tunes, but I probably would have appreciated them more as b-sides to the Black Cherry singles. I kind of lost interest in the band, and have to admit that the only reason I listened to their (yet-unreleased) new album, Seventh Tree, is because I stumbled on a blog where I could download the entire album off by just clicking on a link.

Surprise, surprise: this is exactly the album I was hoping would be their third long play. Once again, they bravely change gears and make a right turn, with a significant change in style, the use of new instruments and arrangements, and a consistent sound and mood throughout the record, making it a very pleasant listen. Evoking the dreamier, more atmospheric tone of Felt Mountain--but without the drama--it is a welcome change in style from their previous two albums--which is somewhat admirable, considering Supernature is their best-selling album to date. The widespread use (or sampling) of acoustic guitars, strings and traditional drumkits I think is a first for this band, bringing to mind a detour similar to the one Air took after Moon Safari when it released the 70's sounding Virgin Suicides soundtrack. (Album opener "Clowns" reminds me a bit of Fairport Covention.) Add mellotrons and mix in a few sparse synth sounds treated with some lo-fi effects to prevent it from sounding too folksy and you get great tracks like "Little Bird" or "Caravan Girl".

I've been listening to this record almost non-stop since I acquired it; although it doesn't have any truly exciting tracks like "Lovely Head" or "Crystalline Green", it certainly is their most consistent release to date, in the sense that on all of their previous records there are, alongside the great tracks, a few I don't care for too much, and that's not the case here: there's not a bad tune on this effort. It's also nice to see (or believe, at least) that they've decided to pursue a creative path rather than a purely commercial one, which is probably why I liked them to begin with. It's too bad they're stuck with a traditional record company, and it's hard to imagine how stalling the release several months when it's already leaked onto the Internet will make anyone any money.

My first album of 2008

I overheard someone in a bar the other day say a new Goldfrapp album was out. I Googled the name of the band along with the album title, and the the 3rd hit (on the first page) was to a blog entry where I could download the entire album (without the band's consent, of course). I went ahead and fetched it, and while I was listening to it, looked for reviews of the album and discovered it's official release date is February 25, 2008. In a Pitchfork article published on November 5, they made fun of the fact that in the 4+ months before the album's release, we knew the label, the release date, the tracklist, and seen a "lovely new press photo", concluding, "Pretty much all we need now is, like, the music!" Is it so strange that Radiohead would prefer to offer their record on their own website in exchange for tips, or that Stars would offer their record on iTunes only 3 days after they got the "gold master" CDs (i.e., 3 months before the actual CDs reach the shelves)? The rules changed a long time ago (heck, I downloaded Radiohead's previous record a full 3 months before it came out 4 years ago, but I did buy it--twice--when it came out), but right now a band that has a finished record in their hands for 4 months without being able to sell it sounds so 20-th century.

Bring on the Night

Maybe because I'm still on a high, but I think last night I may have been at the best concert I've been to this year... and I've been to a lot this year. (Actually, I think Muse at Benicássim will probably be the best one of my life, but that's for reasons that have little to do with the concert itself.) I saw The Police at the River Plate stadium and, maybe because I knew little about what I had in store, I found it--and I rarely use this word--flawless. Impressive sound, an eye-opening stage production, great song selection and arrangements, but most importantly, palpable energy and good vibes from Sting, Stewart and Andy: lots of smiles and movement on the stage. One thing I was expecting (and was gratefully proved wrong) were slower-tempoed, less exciting versions of their hits, to accomodate these men whose average age is around 59; but Sting can still sing, Andy can play great solos, and Stewart still breaks a sweat, making it unecessary to hire session musicians to assemble great songs. Here's one revival this year that was worth it (even if they didn't make any new music.)

The Smallest Weird Number

Mónica, a friend from Mexico, hooked me up with a couple in Buenos Aires that are friends of hers; they invited me to his birthday party on Friday at a brasserie downtown that was closed to the public for the occasion. Speaking with one of the owners/chefs of the restaurant that night, we started talking about where we lived and it turns out he and his wife (another of the co-proprietors/operators of the place) live in the same building I do. In a city with over 12 million people, what are the chances of that?
