Album Commentary: Travis - The Boy With No Name

The Boy With No Name

Does It Always Rain On Me?" estuvo cerca.

I'll try to keep this review short and sweet. Travis released a new record in May, and it will probably go pretty much unnoticed, which is at the same time a shame and sort of what they deserve, because these guys have fine-tuned the craft of songwriting to the point where the songs are so good they become unobtrusive with whatever you happen to be doing at any give time, but at the same time you don't want to stop listening to them. I don't want to call it background music, but I have definitely spent a lot of time listening to this record while doing other stuff, and have found it difficult to pick four songs because they're all as good as the next... without any of them being as good a almost any song on 1999's The Man Who, which many magazines in the UK called the best record of that year. It is leaps and bounds better than 12 Songs, their previous studio album. If you liked The Man Who or The Invisible Band, I expect you to be pleasantly surprised by this slight return to form; if you never heard Travis before but like bands like Coldplay, Keane or Snow Patrol, this is up your alley, if you can tolerate a bit of girlish boo-hooing once in a while; Travis just hasn't had the blockbuster single the other bands have had (think "Clocks") that have made people buy their records and listen to the rest of their songs--although "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" came close.
