Wow, April 14th already?

Así que fuimos a ver a Little Dragon, The Black Keys, The Cribs, y West Indian Girls, en casi 4 noches consecutivas.

Just realized my last post was two weeks ago. Wow, that was fast. And to think I've only got two weeks left in San Francisco. After returning from New York I met a girl with whom I may have the highest musical match I may ever meet; I mean, come on, who else do you know who would want to have Tim Booth sing at their wedding, or be a Gomez completist? So we went to see Little Dragon, The Black Keys, The Cribs, and West Indian Girls, on almost 4 consecutive nights. Oh, and then I got stood up by someone else for a Groove Armada show at Mezzanine on Friday (the 4th); I went to the place to sell my tickets and go back home, and somehow ended up getting in for free; pretty awesome set that was. Then on Saturday Alfonso (my current roomate) held his first 40th birthday party at Crissy Field (pictures here), before heading out to Italy to celebrate with his family. I can't even remember what I did on Sunday anymore. Wednesday was "where's the Olympic torch now?" day. Although I think it was pretty mean to have thousands of people waiting for hours to see the thing and never have it pass through the original route, I have to admit it was kind of fun at one point to feel like you were part of a city-wide cat-and-mouse chase. Then, as my birthday creeped closer and I was alone at home, I fell into this reclusive mode, which I broke out of on Friday night, when I was supposed to meet another girl at Mezzanine (Timo Maas was playing)... only to be stood up *again*. (If the girl from San Angelo I met the next day is reading this, no, I'm not talking about you.) Funny, the Mezzanine's address is 444 Jessie Street, and I always considered 4 to be my lucky number, so it's supposed to be my lucky joint, right? I decided to go anyway and met a girl from Seville there who works at one of Ibiza's most famous clubs and we started taking shots of tequila to make up for the shortcomings of American beers, and both got stupid drunk. Then she said she needed to go to the restroom, and never came back. Awesome! Dumped *three* times in only *two* visits to my 'lucky joint'! Then my cellphone died, and there were several numbers I only had in there. On Saturday morning I woke up fully dressed in my bed trying to remember how I'd gotten home. I was supposed to meet someone I'd been wanting to meet for a while now at the Legion of Honor around noon, so I just changed my shirt, borrowed a cap from my absent flatmate and left the house after a few family calls wishing me a happy birthday. Saturday was a beautiful day, and turned out to be pretty cool, considering I had no plans other than catching the Annie Leibovitz exhibit at the Legion; it turns out the building is very nice, the location amazing and the collection pretty good. Saw Rodin's The Thinker there. (Well, one of the three in the world. They should probably change its name to A Thinker.) From there we caught a bus to somewhere north of the Panhandle, walked to Height Ashbury, then to Lower Height, then to the Mission District, had a pitcher of beer at the Zeitgeist (where I revealed it was my birthday, but only because it turned out it was someone else's on that same day), then some great tacos nearby, then drinks at the Beauty Bar with friends of the girl I was hanging out with, where I also ran into this cool guy named Miles that I *always* run into when I go out (and another girl told me previously I had a "guy crush" on), then to Delirium, where I decided it was time to go home. Sadly, the girl's purse was stolen from that last spot, and I feel bad about that because the possibility of that occuring actually crossed my mind as I was leaving but didn't say anything. I got home, wasn't sleepy, watched a movie, then went to bed. On Sunday morning I went to an AT&T store, where they resurrected my cellphone, and saw a message from the Sevillian girl, apologizing for leaving without saying goodbye, saying she just had to leave because she got really sick. I'll believe her, but only because I got really sick, too. From there to the DeYoung, another museum well worth a visit, where I spent most of the time pleasantly chatting on a sidewalk outside with the girl I was supposed to be examining the art inside with, and not regretting it at all. Then I came home and started preparing my tax report. Now I'm writing this. Not sure when I'll write again, which sucks, cuz there's still lots of good music coming out. James' Hey Ma came out last week, I've been listening to it a lot, trying to like it, and kinda getting there, but... I don't know. I want to believe I'll write about it sometime soon.

Big beer-drinking bears in Brooklyn

And then... patterns

On Tuesday night I went to the supermarket for some stuff and bought some melons, threw them into the fridge. On Wednesday morning, when I took them out for breakfast, I was surprised to find a pattern similar to polka dots on the inside of the plastic over the hollow space in the middle, produced by some strange mix of evaporation and condensation. Whatever it was, it looked cool.

My two most recent entries into the US have been through Houston's Intercontinental Airport (I can't bring myself to call it the "George Bush airport", even if it's named after the father.) When you're waiting in line to go through immigration, you're treated to a fancy 7-minute piece of propaganda on the overhead flatscreens showcasing the diversity and, er, grandiosity of the American people, set to a very puffed up soundtrack. While writing this entry, I ran a search to see if I could find it online, and was not surprised to read it was produced by Disney. (If after watching it you don't agree with me that it's propaganda, read this article from this week's edition of Newsweek.)

I visited a blog the other day that had a link to a picture set on flickr, but it wasn't a "normal" link, because when you rolled the mouse pointer over it, a little window popped up, allowing you to see thumbnails of the pictures without having to leave the page you were on. I wrote to the owner of the blog and he told me he had done that using a free and easy script available on snap.com; I've incorporated it into this blog, so from now on, when you see a little "balloon" next to a link, just rolling the mouse pointer over it will make a balloon pop-up showing content that varies according to what the link points to. In most cases, you'll just see a small preview of the site linked to, but in other cases, the contents of the balloon are more useful; for example, if the link is to a page on YouTube, you'll see the actual video inside the balloon; if it's to a picture, you'll see it right there; if it's an article in wikipedia, you'll see the actual note (not a "picture" of the page); if it's an IMDB entry, you'll get a summary of the movie details; if it's an mp3, you'll see the track's metadata (cover art and all) and you can listen to it right there (but that's been disabled in this blog, because we already have the little 'play' buttons replacing the mp3 files); etcetera. Three examples of the little balloons appear in the first paragraph of the post where I talk about Death Proof and Grindhouse (see four posts below), and here's an example of a flickr photo set.

When I was picking out the photos for that album, I saw a picture I've wanted to post since I took it almost two months ago. The same day I shot those graffitis, I walked by a museum I hadn't been to, the old Convent of El Carmen (now an extension of The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia), where they had two temporary exhibitions, one of paintings by Botero (almost all of them depicting scenes of murder and kidnappings) and another of one of Valencia's first photographers, whose name I've forgotten. The museum didn't allow any pictures taken, but there was one photograph (a set of three, actually), that I liked so much I decided it was worth risking being scorned. Like I said before, I don't remember the photographer's name, nor the names of the people that appear in the pictures, but what I do remember is the year it was taken: 1872. 135 years ago! I liked it a lot because what seemed to be a serious situation--someone (A master? Doesn't look like one) supervising the work of a painter--ends in an unintentionally slapstick-y manner.

Quick update from Utrecht (& Marken & Volendam)

Marken

I've been living over a year and a half in the region of Spain known as "El Levante" (the lifting? the rising? the raising?), and I'd never gone to see how the sun rised over the sea in the morning. The night of June 23rd I went with some friends to celebrate "the night of Saint John" to the beach known as La Malvarrosa; we built our fire (it's the only night they're allowed), we cooked our burgers, had our beers, and in the wee hours, took a dip in the sea. Tradition says you're supposed to ask for 7 wishes, I think, leap over a bonfire, and then run into the ocean and jump over the same number of waves; I only went in for a swim. I thought it was a good opportunity to stay and watch the sun rise, and this was one of the resulting photos. At that time there were only these two persons, but a few hours earlier--if we are to believe the predictions of the local authorities--there were 200,000.

A picture taken after a long day in our "Studio A" in Madrid, where it seems I'll spend at least half of October... Things have been pretty hectic lately in almost every sense. In the meantime, I've been listening to new stuff by Guillemots (samples on the right), Delays, and Darkel, and some not-so-new stuff by Josh Rouse. I was also at Cerati's first show of his current Spanish tour in Valencia, I'll be going for more in Madrid. The next month or two should see new stuff from Badly Drawn Boy, Jarvis Cocker, and The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Damon Albarn's new project.

We don't have a lot of time to write today, but we don't want to abandon the blog for too long, either, so all I'll do is post a picture and talk a bit about an urban trend. The photo was taken a few yards away from the "Mannequin Pis" in Brussels in early June, and I thought it was interesting because, although I don't know when that image was placed there or when its satellite comments were added, it seems only socialist Spaniards do any travelling abroad. The image is an example of "stencil graffiti", a social/artistic manifestation that's been incubating for a decade or two now but I've only started noticing recently and I thought was a mainly European phenomenom, but searching for examples on-line I was surprised to find that the best samples I found--the most politically charged--were in South America. Here are a couple of links to the blog of an American expat in Buenos Aires who's compiled pictures of stencil graffiti in different cities of the world, but pay special attention to the Argentinian ones: Robert Wright's "Sign O' the Times, parts 24-26" and "Sign O' the Times, parts 27-30".

¡Fallas!

Rockdelux published their "best of 2005" lists in their March edition, so I don't feel so bad about taking as long with my own list anymore. Right now I don't have any new reviews, but while I'm here, I'll let you know that, as I learn how to use iWeb, I'm publishing pictures and videos of the Fallas in Valencia at http://www.jcgarza.com/fallas2006. I think I'm done posting pictures, but I do want to upload a few additional videos, but since editing takes time, I may never get around to that...
