Album Commentary: Fresh Wine for the Horses (Re-Release)

My Name Is Love
Oceans
The Night
Intelligent People
Handsome
Rob Dickinson
Fresh Wine for the Horses (Re-Issue)

I already mentioned this last week, but I'll repeat it. Last week saw the re-release of Rob Dickinson's Fresh Wine for the Horses, number 4 on my best of 2005 list. (If that page seems like it's incomplete, it's because I never finished it.) Below I'm copying the brief review I wrote of it back then. In the review I mention it came out the same day as Sigur Rós's Takk, and in the almost three years that have gone by, the Icelanders have toured the world (probably twice), made a beautiful movie of their music and their homeland, put out a collection of new songs to accompany the release of that movie, and recorded a another full-length album that is to be released, coincidentially, this same month. Compare that to re-releasing the same album with a collection of acoustic songs of even older songs and it's not hard to jump to the conclusion that someone's well may be running dry. I'm re-posting this "review" of the re-release just because I feel it's a beautiful album and it deserves more exposure. I should probably also admit I've been listening to it a lot recently because songs like "My Name Is Love" and "Intelligent People" resonate differently--more acutely--inside me now than they did back then.[Original post follows.]

---------

  ---------

I bought this record almost accidentally. I remember I went to Newbury Comics to get the new Sigur Rós CD, and saw that this was released on the same day. I didn't even know a solo project by Rob Dickinson was in the works, although I had, more than once, stopped to wonder what had happenned to Catherine Wheel after Wishville. I came to know the band almost around the time they ended up splitting, and became a big fan of many of their later-day pop-rock pieces (not so much of their early shoegazing stuff). One of the things I liked the most about them was Rob's voice, so I went ahead and bought it and ended up listening to it many, many, many more times than Sigur Ros's CD.

Escucha.

There's not a lot I can say about this record. No revolutions or even evolutions here; it's basically a solid collection of great songs--from epic ballads to cascading rock songs--passionately delivered by Rob's rich and raspy (but gentle) voice over lots of guitars. I can't pick one or two even five favorite songs off this record; it's just one of those CDs I can listen to over and over again and enjoy each time. The songcraft is so good that they can be delivered with just one acoustic guitar, like he did at TT the Bear's in October. Most of the lyrics may seem simplistic at first, but my sense is that they're coming from someone who's matured and decided to take the complicated out of life. I have to admit the songs have more of an emotional hook than a technical one, and in cases like this, trying to dissect them any further may not only be pointless, but counterproductive, as the parts amount to much less than the whole. Have a listen.

Radiohead vs. Portishead

In the last couple of months there have been a handful of artists or bands I really like covering other artists or bands I really like; R.E.M. playing Editors' "Munich" on the BBC (although I have to admit I was more excited when I read about this then when I actually saw their performance...), or Prince claiming the rights to "Creep" after Radiohead has all but disowned the song, resulting in what some have called the best performance at Coachella since, well, Radiohead. Today I found out Radiohead posted a little video of Thom and Jonny covering my favorite song off the new Portishead album, "The Rip". As usual, they do not disappoint.

Sometimes/Laid

And here are the last two songs of James' concert at La Riviera. Had to cut out 3 or 4 minutes because of YouTube's 10-minute limit.

Honest Pleasure

I'm in Madrid since Monday. On Tuesday night I was walking back to the apartment I'm staying in and saw a semi-torn poster on Atocha Street that caught my eye; "Does that really say James?" So I got closer, and it said they played Madrid last week. Shucks. The next morning I went to the FNAC on Callao and as I walked into the modern music floor I saw a small sign that said, "James at La Riviera - New Date - May 8" and I was like, "Oh my God! That's tomorrow!!" So I asked if they sold tickets, and they said tickets were sold out, but, they still had some 'kits' of T-shirt + ticket for 25€. So I bought mine and saw them on Thursday. Tim came on stage on crutches; probably related to the re-scheduling of the shows. From the get-go, it was an amazing show, and being surrounded by so many other enthusiastic fans only made it so much more better; it was a huge party, both on and off the stage (and on the last song they merged.) And it felt so nice seeing so many smiling faces after the show. Almost made my three-week trip to Spain worth it all by itself! Here's a video of the concert kicking off.

This week in music

After a an unusual stretch of great concerts (The Pigeon Detectives at Popscene on Thursday, Explosions in the Sky at The Great American Music Hall on Friday, Jens Lekman at Bimbo's 365 on Saturday and Vampire Weekend at Rickshaw Stop on Sunday), work picked up speed on Monday, preventing me from going to see Beth Orton that night and writing about the shows or this week's releases. This post was actually written on a flight to New York, where I'll be spending the next few days in Manhattan for work and visiting Brooklyn for the first time over the weekend.

Every one of the shows I went to deserves its own post, but as time (and battery life) are limited, I'll just briefly touch on some new releases I feel are worth mentioning--and some that are not. This week saw the release of Guillemots' Red, which I'm listening to and liking. Daniel Lanois put out his Here Is What Is movie/CD bundle, which I've been listening to and isn't bad, but would probably be better appreciated as a film experience--or maybe not; judging from the sound bytes on the CD, I'm afraid it could be a bit of a drag. Not so new but also in heavy rotation this week are Charlatans' You Cross My Path and Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut, which I got hooked on after their show last weekend. From the "so new they're not even out yet" department, I've been listening to R.E.M.'s Accelerate (already singing along to 3 or 4 songs on the record), and M83's Saturdays=Youth, not as engaging but not bad.

Before signing off until next week, I just want to express my disappointment with Morrissey for releasing another "Greatest Hits" record, and would like to invite readers to send suggestions on how to reconcile this weak offering with these lyrics he wrote back in 1987:

Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

Best of! Most of!
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves!
Buy both, and feel deceived

Music forecast for 2008 is looking good...

It seems like we're in for a long run of great releases week after week that should stretch over several months. March 17 sees the release of Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid (which I've been listening to non-stop for the last week or so, expect a review soon), Merz's Moi et mon camion (a song off this record has been the background record on my MySpace page for the last 3 or 4 months), Daniel Lanois releases Here Is What Is and Muse put out Haarp, last year's Wembley concert, in both CD and DVD (see preview at the end of this post.) On March 24 Guillemots give us Red and Supergrass present Diamond Hoo Ha. On March 31 R.E.M. return with Accelerate and Moby tells about Last Night.

April 7 will see James' comeback with Hey Ma, and Gnarls Barkley will use The Odd Couple as an excuse to keep dressing up as famous couples. On April 14, after *11* years, Portishead reemerge with their Third album, and M83 release Saturdays. The Delays' Everything's the Rush is released on April 28, as well as Jamie Lidell's Jim.

On May 13 we should be getting Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs, and just a week later we should be getting our hands on Coldplay's Prospekt. Later in May we'll get a new record from Spiritualized, Songs in A&E.

Then there's the slew of bands who have already spent months, if not years, preparing their next releases, and hopefully we'll be able to listen to in the summer or fall: U2, The Cure, The Verve, Franz Ferdinand, Echo and the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, Doves, Mogwai, and Sigur Ros, who I'm excited to hear is working with Flood, one of my all-time favorite producers, who's helmed or collaborated on many of my favorite albums from U2, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Charlatans, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, and Goldfrapp's latest, Seventh Tree.

New Charlatans album, gratis

Vanity o You Cross My Path.

Another example of the strange times we're in regarding how music is delivered: The Charlatans have made their most recent album available as a free download from the xfm site, no strings attached. If you like the band, go get it; if you don't know (or remember) who they are, check out Oh! Vanity or You Cross My Path. If you know who they are and have never really liked them, this won't change anything.

2007 Party Mix

I've been jotting down notes for my 'Best of 2007' posts since November but it now seems very unlikely I may get around to them anytime soon, with all that's going on and coming up. So in the meantime, here's a little 'mix tape' with songs off of some of my favorite albums from last year. I put this together rather quickly in one evening for a party I went to a few days ago here in Monterrey, so I tried to keep the selection somewhat upbeat--meaning a few of my favorite albums (e.g., Wilco or The Bees (U.S.)) were left out. It's not exactly a 'dance' album, but I hope it will at least keep you tapping your feet at your next soirée, pounding the steering wheel while you drive or singing out loud in the shower.

Although I did make a CD with these 21 tracks, here I'll only upload a single mp3 file with all the songs as a single session; to listen to it, click here; to download, unzip this file (110 MB).

¡Feliz 2008!

Finally, I just want to mention that about a year ago I added a 'hit counter' to the blog, expecting to find I had 3 or 4 visits a week; it turns out I was getting about 12 or 15 per day, for a total of almost 5500 visits during the year. About two thirds are people who arrive from Google searches, but the other third are returning visitors. If you happen to be a returning visitor, I just want to say thanks for stopping by and let you know that comments to the posts or messages in the guestbook always cheer me up. Have a great 2008!

Album Commentary: Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Clowns
Little Bird
Happiness
Cologne Cerrone Houdini
Caravan Girl
Goldfrapp
Seventh Tree

"Utopia" is one of those tracks I'll never forget the first time I heard; I was at the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysees when it started playing on the video screens and I just had to find out who it was. I bought Felt Mountain then and there and after listening to the first track I was rather excited with having found a band that had a relatively fresh and unique sound. Then when Black Cherry came out, I was blown away because it was a radical change in sound, towards raw-er synths and raunchier sounds, and although the sound and tone of the album was very different from the first one, the sound of the band was still there, making my admiration grow, and inevitably making me look forward to what they would do "next". And what they did was disappoint me by not surpising me at all. Supernature was a repetition of the Black Cherry sound, but without as many good songs. Granted, there were two or three catchy tunes, but I probably would have appreciated them more as b-sides to the Black Cherry singles. I kind of lost interest in the band, and have to admit that the only reason I listened to their (yet-unreleased) new album, Seventh Tree, is because I stumbled on a blog where I could download the entire album off by just clicking on a link.

Surprise, surprise: this is exactly the album I was hoping would be their third long play. Once again, they bravely change gears and make a right turn, with a significant change in style, the use of new instruments and arrangements, and a consistent sound and mood throughout the record, making it a very pleasant listen. Evoking the dreamier, more atmospheric tone of Felt Mountain--but without the drama--it is a welcome change in style from their previous two albums--which is somewhat admirable, considering Supernature is their best-selling album to date. The widespread use (or sampling) of acoustic guitars, strings and traditional drumkits I think is a first for this band, bringing to mind a detour similar to the one Air took after Moon Safari when it released the 70's sounding Virgin Suicides soundtrack. (Album opener "Clowns" reminds me a bit of Fairport Covention.) Add mellotrons and mix in a few sparse synth sounds treated with some lo-fi effects to prevent it from sounding too folksy and you get great tracks like "Little Bird" or "Caravan Girl".

I've been listening to this record almost non-stop since I acquired it; although it doesn't have any truly exciting tracks like "Lovely Head" or "Crystalline Green", it certainly is their most consistent release to date, in the sense that on all of their previous records there are, alongside the great tracks, a few I don't care for too much, and that's not the case here: there's not a bad tune on this effort. It's also nice to see (or believe, at least) that they've decided to pursue a creative path rather than a purely commercial one, which is probably why I liked them to begin with. It's too bad they're stuck with a traditional record company, and it's hard to imagine how stalling the release several months when it's already leaked onto the Internet will make anyone any money.

Radio Ga Ga

There are several things I've wanted to write about in the last week but haven't gotten around to it. The Sunday before I left San Antonio I went to see "No Country for Old Men", which is one of those movies that you leave bewildered and making an effort to fully appreciate, because you know you've just witnessed something out of the ordinary. That post is almost done. Then on the flight back I sat next to a 52-year-old Canadian woman who was on her way to Ushuaia to get on a cruise ship that would take her on an expedition to the Antartica; 3 days later I read that an expedition boat that left Ushuaia towards the Antartica had hit an iceberg and sank; fortunately all passengers were rescued. I'll never know if she was on it, but they did mention there were a few Canadian passengers on the boat. On Friday I went to see Battles; not quite my cup of tea, but I wouldn't think twice about seeing them again.

Over the weekend, I spent more time indoors than I should have, and two of the entities to blame are Merz and Radiohead; the former for releasing 4 immaculate tracks on his MySpace page that I can't stop listening to, and the latter for... well, for just being themselves and then having the brilliant idea of sharing it with us. I learned a couple of weeks late, but on November 9 they did a (semi-)live one-hour webcast on radiohead.tv (which now seems to be down) that they called "Thumbs Down" to celebrate the release of "In Rainbows"; it's now all over YouTube; albeit, in disordered fragments. As a fan, I find all of it mesmerizing; but one of the outstanding things about watching them put all of this together is that it just shatters the popular notion of them as miserable, depressing, paranoid mopers; here are just five guys, free of any formal commitments (professionally speaking), showing they have fun just like any of us--which we fans, deep down, already knew.

Before and during the webcast, they took turns DJing samples of the music each of them is into, ranging from Iggy Pop to Fela Kuti to Kenny Rogers--and Juana Molina (who I saw just a couple of weeks ago in Buenos Aires!) Thom's set was the longest and 'clubbiest', giving most famous DJs a run for their money. Could any of you non-fans ever have imagined him dancing like this to M.I.A.? (Equally hard to believe is that in another segment we see the drummer dancing with little-to-no coordination at all...)

Here's the welcome message from Thom, and a simple-but-nonetheless-amusing video they had pre-recorded for "Jigsaw Falling into Place", the next-to-last song on their new record and probably because of that one of the last ones you may come to appreciate.

Luego hicieron cosas como esta:

Then they did things like this:

And this is their apology to David Fincher:

To see them play other songs of theirs (played live during the webcast), or covers of The Smiths, Joy Division and Björk--their selection, for me, is moving but complaisant--do a search for 'radiohead webcast' on YouTube.

A final word on "In Rainbows": when I first downloaded the record, I was a little upset because I felt the band had been somewhat sloppy in tagging the metadata info in the mp3 files. I can only imagine that if I were to sell my music online I'd fill the 'Comments' field with who produced it and what not, and especially include the "cover art" in the file--which they didn't. Now, I don't know if they intended it or not, but what this gave place to was a phenomenon that I believe is entirely new: fans started creating their own cover art files and sharing them over the Internet. I don't need to say that the "quality" of the covers oscillates wildly. I, for example, being the efficient-but-not-very-creative type, just took a snapshot of a segment of their website:

Others were more creative; of the couple dozen I saw, this was my favorite:

An Argentinian magazine that had a cover story on the record ended the article saying, "[...] Radiohead seems to have achieved what up until now seemed impossible: in our age, when people download and accumulate songs they never get around to listening to, the band grants their audience an active role and once again makes the release of an album an exciting moment."

About the Radiohead album

The day I published the note about the new Radiohead album I was so excited and in a rush to upload it I didn't even read the official site I was linking to. Yesterday I ran into a friend on the street and he mentioned something I was unaware of, and it's one of those things that reminds you why some bands are your favorite bands, and how cool it is when they do things that are at the same time surprising and consistent with what you expect from them. Radiohead will allow people to download their new record off their own website ad pay whatever they believe is fair... zero quid included among the options. Pure genius! (When looking for an article on this note, I ran into this one in El País [in Spanish], and seeing an original Apple logo on Thom's guitar, once again, reinforces that sensation that one cannot go wrong with these guys. Back in Boston, I had a black Stratocaster-imitation guitar with a white Apple logo on it.) (Another article from El País.) I still have on my to-do list to upload a post on the new record from Stars, In Our Bedroom After the War, that they released for sale on iTunes just three days after they received the final masters they use to press the CDs, that take an average of three months to hit the shelves. A month after I purchased it, I heard a podcast where someone mentioned they had already sold 10,000 copies. Another example that, if the music's good, record labels are unnecessary.

Album Commentary: Kula Shaker - Strangefolk

Fool That I Am
Hurricane Season
Ol' Jack Tar
Second Sight
Kula Shaker
Strangefolk

(Written on Saturday, September 8, on a train from Madrid to Valencia)

They say that what is bred in the bone will come out in the flesh, and despite getting my hands on some great records in the last weeks, the new Kula Shaker album is the one increasing the 'play counter' the fastest. And I don't even like it that much! Overall, I'm rather disappointed with it. After two amazing but somewhat unnoticed (outside the UK, at least) albums, released 11 and 8 years ago, Kula Shaker dismembered. Their singer/songwriter/guitarist, Crispian Mills, formed a band called The Jeevas, whose debut was a bit of a surprise because, although it had some great songs, was very "humble" compared to the pompousness and ambition of the Kulas: no more 7-minute progressive/psychedelic orchestral expeditions, but rather 2-and-half minute pop/rock tunes played by a plain-Jane rock trio. (Billy Corgan formed Zwan around the same time, and it was interesting because he also stepped back from the Pumpkins' grandiloquence in favor of stripped-back pop/rock melodies.) The second Jeevas album, I have to admit, was a boring disaster, seemingly just put together to protest against Bush and the war in Iraq. Then last year, Kula Shaker announced it was returning, releasing a 4-song EP called The Return of the King of which I kinda liked 2 songs and disliked the other 2; none of them held a candle to anything on their first 2 records, the obvious missing factor being (despite its title) the pretentiousness that had propelled them so much when they started out. They played a few shows last year, and I was lucky enough to see them play at the Purple Weekend festival in León, Spain; it was an amazing show and although they barely played any new material, I was genuinely excited with the possibilities that were on display.

So it finally arrived: Strangefolk. Somewhere in between Kula Shaker and The Jeevas, it's neither. It's Kula Shaker in that it has the psychadelia, the Indian harmonies and occasional lyrics in sanskrit and spiritual topics, but it's Jeevas in that the tunes are much more conventional in their verse/chorus/verse/chorus structures... and in that the songs just aren't that good. Let me first point out what really ticked me off: the 2 songs of The Revenge of the King EP they decided to re-work and include here are the two I hated, not the two I kinda liked. And even more disappointing is that they also re-recorded "Narayan", a song off Prodigy's Fat of the Land which Crispian co-wrote and sang on 10 years ago, but it's a very flimsy take compared with Prodigy's powerful, fierce and menacing--unimprovable--original. (The sweet point here for me was that Kula Shaker mixed it up with "Climbatize", another song off The Fat of the Land, and I actually mixed those two same songs on the very first mix CD I ever made, The Land of the Phat, over 7 years ago!) So, just there, we have 3 songs that aren't even "new". On top of that, the title track, which is more like an "intermission", inevitably brings to mind Radiohead's "Fitter, Happier", which can't help but make you feel they've run out of gas. In consequence, I rarely made it past the first few songs of the record before getting tired and/or annoyed and switching to something else.

Y luego está, por supuesto, esa melodía que no puedo evitar cantar cada vez que comienza "Ol' Jack Tar": "Golden horizon... hope of the sea... a breeze... calling me back to my love...". I'm a dick/I'm a dick/I'm a dictator/of the free world").

Maybe because it hasn't made it out of the 'Recently Added' playlist, having my iPod in shuffle mode made me start noticing the songs right after the album's mid-point: slower, moodier songs with engaging melodies and small, specific sections that really stand out and had me going for the rewind button every 30 seconds, like the organ orgasm in the middle of "Hurricane Season" or the slight variations after the second verse in "Fool That I Am". Then, of course, there's that melody I can't stop myself from singing along to in "Ol' Jack Tar": "Golden horizon... hope of the sea... a breeze... calling me back to my love...". As is usual with me, the lyrics are the last thing I notice, and so far, I'm sad to say they seem to have gone the same route as the music (as in, not as good as before); I haven't spotted any exciting, inspiring lyrics, but have noticed some pretty naive, simplistic ones ("I'm a dick/I'm a dick/I'm a dictator/of the free world").

Drop In the Sea

All in all, not a terrible album, but not one that will get noticed by a lot of people (unless it's to poke fun at). I'll leave you with a little-known 2-and-a-half-minute gem that reinforces the thought that Kula Shaker's finest moment was when they were barely off the launching pad, over 10 years ago now. It's a sweet, emotive, acoustic piece played with just one guitar and is more in the spirit of the songs on the new album, both in tone and theme, but still has way better lyrics and a better melody. Thing is, this was what they used to release as b-sides, not full albums.

New releases: week of August 20, 2007

¡¡archivos WMA!! ¿¡¿Archivos WMA?!?

After a brief recess, the deluge of new records picks up strength again... Two highly anticipated albums (well, by me, at least) are out this week in th UK: Kula Shaker's Strangefolk and Richard Hawley's Lady's Bridge. It's been 8240 days since Kula Shaker released a proper album, so I went in to buy Strangefolk digitally from the stores the band linked to from their MySpace page only to find that one of them only sold physical discs and the other only sold... WMA files!! WMA files?!? What is up with that? Kula Shaker lined up with the quintessential corporate monster? Even worse, the help section of the store they're sold on is very inconsistent; somewhere it says that Mac users can't play the files, somewhere else it says "they can be converted to be uploaded to your iPod"; in one place it says the WMA files have "standard DRM protection", but another place says they "play across any PC and Windows Media Player". And it does state that Mac users can't burn the tracks to CD. And then they wonder why iTunes has been so successful! So I guess I'll have to wait until I find the CD in a store. Or maybe, just maybe, I could re-install LimeWire and get illegal MP3s (which would be only illegal up until the moment I purcahse the CD.) Regarding Richard Hawley, his previous record, Cole's Corner, was one of the records I listened to the most during the last months of last year (although it was realeased in 2005). I meant to add a few tracks of his to the jukebox and upload a review, but never got around to it. Maybe I'll just post a double review when I get my hands on Lady's Bridge. In the meantime, listen to a couple of songs from each album on his MySpace page.

Album Commentary: Merz - Merz

Many Weathers Apart
Lotus
Lovely Daughter
Blues Became
Blues Became (Ochestra and Drums)
Merz
Merz

Not all of the music I've been listening to recently is actually recent. A few weeks ago I downloaded Merz's first (and eponymous) album off his website for a cool 7 quid. The original record, released in either 1999 or 2000 (can't remember right now), only had 10 tracks, but in March of this year it got re-issued as a 2-CD edition, the bonus disc carrying a handful of new songs and two handfuls of remixes. I first got hooked on him when I heard "Postcard from a Dark Star" on the KCRW Today's Top Tune podcast and, despite it's simplicity, couldn't stop listening to it for several days; I developed so much faith in his craft from listening to just this one song that I purchased the Loveheart album without listening to it and it would have easily been my favorite record of 2006, had I not stumbled upon Josh Rouse's discography later that year. So when his first CD got re-issued I had no hesitation in buying it, and I was not disappointed. I don't want to get too fancy in my description of his music, but when you have someone as innovative as this, it's hard to describe in plain terms. I see him as a "singer-songwriter" of the 21st century; a folk artist not only not afraid to use the sounds and technology available to him in our age, but sculpting those noises to create beautiful sounds. Try to imagine if Beck had recorded Sea Change not with acoustic guitars, but rather with the samplers we're more used to hearing him fiddle with. Not gifted with a soothing voice, he makes up for it with expression, confidence and earnestness. I only wish there were more artists like him that actually make things that don't sound like anything you've heard before. Coldplay were once quoted as saying, "Merz sounds like nobody else in the world and the world would be alright if it listened to nobody else... We absolutely love him."

The bonus CD has an "orchestra and drum band" version of "Blues Became" which I like as much as the original. I'm uploading both versions to the blog because I find it very intersting how the actual song--basic rhythm and melody, I suppose--stands on its own, whether it has sequencers, samplers and synthesizers underneath it (like in the original version) or an orchestra, choir and drum band (as in the alternate version.) If you like what you hear, support the artist! http://www.merz.co.uk

Album Commentary: Travis - The Boy With No Name

3 Times and You Lose
Closer
Battleships
Big Chair
Travis
The Boy With No Name

Does It Always Rain On Me?" estuvo cerca.

I'll try to keep this review short and sweet. Travis released a new record in May, and it will probably go pretty much unnoticed, which is at the same time a shame and sort of what they deserve, because these guys have fine-tuned the craft of songwriting to the point where the songs are so good they become unobtrusive with whatever you happen to be doing at any give time, but at the same time you don't want to stop listening to them. I don't want to call it background music, but I have definitely spent a lot of time listening to this record while doing other stuff, and have found it difficult to pick four songs because they're all as good as the next... without any of them being as good a almost any song on 1999's The Man Who, which many magazines in the UK called the best record of that year. It is leaps and bounds better than 12 Songs, their previous studio album. If you liked The Man Who or The Invisible Band, I expect you to be pleasantly surprised by this slight return to form; if you never heard Travis before but like bands like Coldplay, Keane or Snow Patrol, this is up your alley, if you can tolerate a bit of girlish boo-hooing once in a while; Travis just hasn't had the blockbuster single the other bands have had (think "Clocks") that have made people buy their records and listen to the rest of their songs--although "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" came close.

Speaking of Coldplay...

...I read somewhere that they're working on their new record with none other than Brian Eno at the helm, which is great news, because I once wrote (in my "Best of 2005" summary) that my favorite song off of X&Y was "Low", the only song he produced on that record, and that they needed to be challenged to stop writing crap like "Fix You". Elsewhere, I read Eno and Daniel Lanois were working with U2 in Morocco on their new record, which is also good news, because all the records they've produced for them have been their most succesful. Now all I need to read is that he'll also be working on James' new record, due later this year--he produced Laid and Millionaires, two of their best releases.

Speaking of his recent sessions with U2, Eno says, "We have a lot of pieces. My general rule is that I'm only interested in things I have never heard anything like before - and we've got plenty of those!" I can only wish that's true... U2 could use a bit of challenging themselves to go back to their more adventurous mid-90's experimentation.

A few forgotten James B-sides

I Defeat (con Sinéad O'Connor)
Stolen Horse
All Good Boys
Downstairs
Wisdom of the Throat

Y una canción nueva:
Who Are You

A few days ago I found myself, like for the seventh time in my life, putting together a "subjective anthology" of James songs for a new friend who'd never heard them before and is going to the Summercase festival this year, whose lineup they're a part of. As I was going over the songs in iTunes to choose the ones that in the end would make up two CDs, there were many I hadn't listened to in a long time and had forgotten how much I'd liked, and once again was amazed by the number of "B sides" they had that I thougt were better than many of the "A sides" released by themselves (or any other artist, for that matter) and that nobody--with the exception of their die-hard fans, like yours truly--had ever listened to. I decided to place five of those songs, all of them from the Millionaires era (1999), in my "jukebox", and while I was at it, put direct links to the songs here. I suppose it's a good enough time to mention that last month saw the release of a compilation of all of James' singles, 31 in total, plus 2 new songs, one of which ("Who Are You") I've also thrown in the jukebox and below these lines, and that they're supposed to be coming out with some new stuff later this year. I've lost all hope that they'll ever get the world fame they deserve--I was *certain* that when Millionaires came out they would, well, become millionaires, but the album wasn't even a blip on anyone's radar--but on the other hand, they've failed miserably and and risen from their ashes with relative success in the past, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Some Millionaires-era B-Sides:
I Defeat (with Sinéad O'Connor)
Stolen Horse
All Good Boys
Downstairs
Wisdom of the Throat

And a new song:
Who Are You

Chemical Brothers' new album online

The Pills Won't Help You."

The Chemical Brothers have posted We Are the Night, their 6th studio album, in its entirety on their MySpace page, http://www.myspace.com/thechemicalbrothers. As usual, it includes a number of respectable guest singers; among them in this edition is Midlake's singer Tim Smith, lending his voice to "The Pills Won't Help You." The CD is out in Europe on July 17th and probably the next day in the U.S.

The return of James & Kula Shaker

I'm a bit excited because two of my all-time favorite bands that had seemed to split up for good have recently announced they reform not only to tour but also to record new material. One of them is Kula Shaker, who surprised us with a (so-so) EP last April, but made up for it with a more than phenomenal live show at the Purple Weekend in León (Spain) in December. Today they've posted this brief announcement on their MySpace page:

As promised, Kula Shaker have now officially announced their return in 2007
with news of new management, new up and coming fan communities, a soon to be
revealed revamped website and the main thing....the release of a new EP and
the long awaited third album. A busy year ahead folks!

The other band is James. Today, Jim Glennie, the only original band member who was always in the line-up (he's been in the band even longer than Tim Booth has), has posted this letter on the front of their new official website, wearejames.com:

I had high hopes for good music last year, but looking back at it, it didn't have a lot of highlights. Let's hope this one's better. Oh, and expect a huge addition to the jukebox in the next month, and a refreshing of the "currently listening to" list on the right.
