This week in music
Después de una sucesión inusual de buenos conciertos (The Pigeon Detectives en Popscene el jueves, Explosions in the Sky en The Great American Music Hall el viernes, Jens Lekman en Bimbo's 365 el sábado y Vampire Weekend en Rickshaw Stop el domingo), el trabajo agarró vuelo el lunes, impidiéndome ir a ver a Beth Orton esa noche y escribir acerca de los conciertos o los discos nuevos de esta semana. De hecho, esta nota fue escrita en un vuelo a Nueva York, donde pasaré unos días en Manhattan de trabajo y visitaré Brooklyn por primera vez el fin de semana. | After a an unusual stretch of great concerts (The Pigeon Detectives at Popscene on Thursday, Explosions in the Sky at The Great American Music Hall on Friday, Jens Lekman at Bimbo's 365 on Saturday and Vampire Weekend at Rickshaw Stop on Sunday), work picked up speed on Monday, preventing me from going to see Beth Orton that night and writing about the shows or this week's releases. This post was actually written on a flight to New York, where I'll be spending the next few days in Manhattan for work and visiting Brooklyn for the first time over the weekend. | |
| Cada uno de los conciertos a los que fui merece su propia nota, pero como el tiempo (y la batería) son limitados, sólo tocaré por encimita algunos discos nuevos que creo que valen la pena mencionar--y otros que no. Esta semana salió Red de Guillemots, Que he estado escuchando y me gusta. Daniel Lanois sacó su combo de película/CD Here Is What Is, que he estado escuchando y no está mal, pero probablemente se aprecie más como una experiencia fílmica--o quizás no; juzgando por las piezas de diálgo incluídas en el CD, me temo que pueda ser un poco aburrida. No tan nuevos pero también en alta rotación esta semana he tenido a You Cross My Path de Charlatans y el debut epónimo de Vampire Weekend, al que me enganché desués de verlos en vivo el fin de semana pasado. Del departamento de "tan nuevos que aún no salen siquiera", he estado escuchando el Accelerate de R.E.M. (del que ya me pongo a cantar 3 ó 4 canciones), y Saturdays=Youth de M83, no tan cautivante pero no tan malo. | Every one of the shows I went to deserves its own post, but as time (and battery life) are limited, I'll just briefly touch on some new releases I feel are worth mentioning--and some that are not. This week saw the release of Guillemots' Red, which I'm listening to and liking. Daniel Lanois put out his Here Is What Is movie/CD bundle, which I've been listening to and isn't bad, but would probably be better appreciated as a film experience--or maybe not; judging from the sound bytes on the CD, I'm afraid it could be a bit of a drag. Not so new but also in heavy rotation this week are Charlatans' You Cross My Path and Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut, which I got hooked on after their show last weekend. From the "so new they're not even out yet" department, I've been listening to R.E.M.'s Accelerate (already singing along to 3 or 4 songs on the record), and M83's Saturdays=Youth, not as engaging but not bad. | |

Speaking of Coldplay...
...leí en alguna parte que están trabajando en su disco nuevo con nadie menos que Brian Eno al timón, lo cual es una buena noticia, porque alguna vez escribí (en mi resúmen de "lo mejor de 2005") que mi canción favorita de X&Y era "Low", la única que produjo él en ese disco, y que necesitaban ese tipo de estímulos para dejar de escribir c*gadas como "Fix You". En otro sitio, leí que Eno y Daniel Lanois están trabajando con U2 en Marruecos en su disco nuevo, lo cual también es buena noticia, porque está claro que los discos producidos por ellos han sido sus más exitosos. Ya lo único que me queda por leer que trabajará también en el disco nuevo de James--él produjo Laid y Millionaires, dos de sus mejores álbums. | ...I read somewhere that they're working on their new record with none other than Brian Eno at the helm, which is great news, because I once wrote (in my "Best of 2005" summary) that my favorite song off of X&Y was "Low", the only song he produced on that record, and that they needed to be challenged to stop writing crap like "Fix You". Elsewhere, I read Eno and Daniel Lanois were working with U2 in Morocco on their new record, which is also good news, because all the records they've produced for them have been their most succesful.
