This week in music

After a an unusual stretch of great concerts (The Pigeon Detectives at Popscene on Thursday, Explosions in the Sky at The Great American Music Hall on Friday, Jens Lekman at Bimbo's 365 on Saturday and Vampire Weekend at Rickshaw Stop on Sunday), work picked up speed on Monday, preventing me from going to see Beth Orton that night and writing about the shows or this week's releases. This post was actually written on a flight to New York, where I'll be spending the next few days in Manhattan for work and visiting Brooklyn for the first time over the weekend.

Every one of the shows I went to deserves its own post, but as time (and battery life) are limited, I'll just briefly touch on some new releases I feel are worth mentioning--and some that are not. This week saw the release of Guillemots' Red, which I'm listening to and liking. Daniel Lanois put out his Here Is What Is movie/CD bundle, which I've been listening to and isn't bad, but would probably be better appreciated as a film experience--or maybe not; judging from the sound bytes on the CD, I'm afraid it could be a bit of a drag. Not so new but also in heavy rotation this week are Charlatans' You Cross My Path and Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut, which I got hooked on after their show last weekend. From the "so new they're not even out yet" department, I've been listening to R.E.M.'s Accelerate (already singing along to 3 or 4 songs on the record), and M83's Saturdays=Youth, not as engaging but not bad.

Before signing off until next week, I just want to express my disappointment with Morrissey for releasing another "Greatest Hits" record, and would like to invite readers to send suggestions on how to reconcile this weak offering with these lyrics he wrote back in 1987:

Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

Best of! Most of!
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves!
Buy both, and feel deceived

Casiotone for Smiths/Morrissey fans

The Smiths, "Sheila Take a Bow".

Yesterday I was listening to a Houston Party Records sampler CD I got a the Primavera Sound festival over a month ago, and there's a song, "Nashville Parthenon", by a one-man band called Casiotone for the Painfully Alone that I really liked; a mechanically monotone voice over evidently cheap synths, but still somehow very touching (to listen to it, click here: ); I particularly enjoy the slide guitar section around the middle of the song. I found a mostly unremarkable video for it on YouTube (funny how an obviously gay song turns into a boy/girl story when transferred to video), but noticed the title of another of their songs, "Toby Take a Bow", that drew my attention because of its "similarity" with a classic Smiths tune, "Sheila Take a Bow". I watched the video--also evidently very cheaply done--and have to say that, being an age-old Smiths/Morrissey fan, was very moved. (If you're not a Morrissey fan, I suppose you won't get any of the visual or lyrical winks and will probably find the video deadly boring, not to mention somewhat disconcerting...)
