Music forecast for 2008 is looking good...
Parece que estamos por entrar en una racha de buenos discos que podrá abarcar varios meses. El 17 de marzo sale The Seldom Seen Kid de Elbow (el cual ge tenido en rotación dura la última semana, esperen una reseña pronto), Moi et mon camion de Merz (una canción de ese disco ha sido la música de fondo en mi página de MySpace desde hace tres o cuatro meses), Daniel Lanois saca Here Is What Is y Muse presenta Haarp, un concierto en Wembley el año pasado, tanto en CD como DVD (ver adelanto al final de esta nota). El 24 de marzo Guillemots nos dan Red y Supergrass entrega Diamond Hoo Ha. El 31 R.E.M. vuelve con Accelerate y Moby nos habla acerca de Last Night. | It seems like we're in for a long run of great releases week after week that should stretch over several months. March 17 sees the release of Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid (which I've been listening to non-stop for the last week or so, expect a review soon), Merz's Moi et mon camion (a song off this record has been the background record on my MySpace page for the last 3 or 4 months), Daniel Lanois releases Here Is What Is and Muse put out Haarp, last year's Wembley concert, in both CD and DVD (see preview at the end of this post.) On March 24 Guillemots give us Red and Supergrass present Diamond Hoo Ha. On March 31 R.E.M. return with Accelerate and Moby tells about Last Night. | |

| Luego está el montón de bandas que llevan meses, si no es que años, preparando sus próximos proyectos, y ojalá podamos escucharlos en el verano u otoño: U2, The Cure, The Verve, Franz Ferdinand, Echo and the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, Doves, Mogwai, y Sigur Ros, quien me alegra esté trabajando con Flood, uno de mis productores favoritos, quien ha estado a cargo (o colaborado) de muchos de mis discos favoritos de U2, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Charlatans, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, y el más reciente de Goldfrapp, Seventh Tree. | Then there's the slew of bands who have already spent months, if not years, preparing their next releases, and hopefully we'll be able to listen to in the summer or fall: U2, The Cure, The Verve, Franz Ferdinand, Echo and the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, Doves, Mogwai, and Sigur Ros, who I'm excited to hear is working with Flood, one of my all-time favorite producers, who's helmed or collaborated on many of my favorite albums from U2, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Charlatans, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, and Goldfrapp's latest, Seventh Tree. | |

Album Commentary: Merz - Merz

No toda la música que he estado escuchando recientemente es reciente. Hace algunas semanas me bajé el primer (y homónimo) disco de Merz de su sitio de web por 7 módicas libras. El disco original, que salió en 1999 o 2000 (ahora mismo no lo recuerdo), tenía sólo 10 pistas, pero en marzo de este año se reeditó en una edición de 2 discos, el bonus disc portando un puñado de temas nuevos y dos puñados de remixes. Me enganché a él cuando escuché "Postcard from a Dark Star" en el podcast de KCRW, Today's Top Tune, y, a pesar de su simplicidad, no podía dejar de escucharlo por varios días; desarrollé tanta fe en su talento escuchando solamente esa canción que me compré el disco de Loveheart sin escucharlo antes y habría sido fácilmente mi disco favorito de 2006, de no habérseme cruzado en el camino más tarde ese mismo año la discografía de Josh Rouse. Así que cuando su primer disco fue reeditado, no dudé en comprarlo, y no hay arrepentimientos. No quiero ponerme muy elegante en la descripción de su música, pero cuando tienes a alguien tan inovador como él, es difícil hablar en términos planos. Lo veo como un cantaautor del siglo 21; un artista folk no solamente sin miedo a usar los sonidos y las técnicas disponibles en nuestra era, pero esculpiendo esos ruidos para crear sonidos hermosos. Trata de imaginar si Beck hubiese grabado Sea Change no con guitarras acústicas, sino con los samplers a los que estamos más acostumbrados escucharle trinquetear. No agraciado con una voz muy sosegante, lo compensa con expresión, confianza y sinceridad. Quisiera que hubieran más artistas como él que hacen cosas que en realidad no se han escchado antes. Coldplay fuueron citados una vez diciendo, "Merz suena como nadie más en este mundo y el mundo estaría bien si no escuchara a nadie más... Amamos lo que hace." | Not all of the music I've been listening to recently is actually recent. A few weeks ago I downloaded Merz's first (and eponymous) album off his website for a cool 7 quid. The original record, released in either 1999 or 2000 (can't remember right now), only had 10 tracks, but in March of this year it got re-issued as a 2-CD edition, the bonus disc carrying a handful of new songs and two handfuls of remixes. I first got hooked on him when I heard "Postcard from a Dark Star" on the KCRW Today's Top Tune podcast and, despite it's simplicity, couldn't stop listening to it for several days; I developed so much faith in his craft from listening to just this one song that I purchased the Loveheart album without listening to it and it would have easily been my favorite record of 2006, had I not stumbled upon Josh Rouse's discography later that year. So when his first CD got re-issued I had no hesitation in buying it, and I was not disappointed. I don't want to get too fancy in my description of his music, but when you have someone as innovative as this, it's hard to describe in plain terms. I see him as a "singer-songwriter" of the 21st century; a folk artist not only not afraid to use the sounds and technology available to him in our age, but sculpting those noises to create beautiful sounds. Try to imagine if Beck had recorded Sea Change not with acoustic guitars, but rather with the samplers we're more used to hearing him fiddle with. Not gifted with a soothing voice, he makes up for it with expression, confidence and earnestness. I only wish there were more artists like him that actually make things that don't sound like anything you've heard before. Coldplay were once quoted as saying, "Merz sounds like nobody else in the world and the world would be alright if it listened to nobody else... We absolutely love him." | |||
| El bonus disc tiene una versión de "orquesta y banda de percusiones" de "Blues Became" que me ha gustado tanto como la original. Estoy subiendo ambas versiones al blog porque me resulta muy interesante como la canción en sí--el ritmo y la melodía básicas, supongo--se sostiene sola, ya sea con secuenciadores, samplers y sintes debajo (como en la versión original) o una orquesta, coro y banda de percusiones (como en la versión alterna). I'm uploading both versions to the blog because I find it very intersting how the actual song--basic rhythm and melody, I suppose--stands on its own, whether it has sequencers, samplers and synthesizers underneath it (like in the original version) or an orchestra, choir and drum band (as in the alternate version.)
