Escribir una reseña de un festival cuando no han pasado siquiera tres semanas de haber ocurrido debe ser un nuevo récord para mí. La brevedad de mis comentarios probablemente sean la razón detrás de esta agilidad.
| | Writing a review of a festival less than three weeks after it takes place is probably a record for me. The brevity of my comments are probably the reason this was done so fast.
| El festival de música Primavera Sound es, creo, uno de los más antiguos en España, o al menos uno de los más consolidados (más aún en estos días, en los que parece haber uno cada fin de semana). Juzgando por el cartel y los patrocinadores, este es--como lo son la mayoría de los festivales veraniegos en Europa--un festival "indie". (Esa palabra se ha vuelto tan estudiada.) Es en Barcelona, y las ediciones más recientes han sido en El Parc del Fórum, un recinto al lado del mar que es quizás el mejor lugar para un festival al que he ido, lejos de tu usual terreno de tierra y piedras con carpas improvisadas. Es amplio, fácilmente accesible por el tren ligero de la ciudad, y uno de los escenarios tiene al Mediterráneo justo detrás; también me complació ver quelos organizadores han reconocido que el número de adultos que no dejan de escuchar música popular contemporánea está creciendo, y les ha facilitado venir al festival con sus niños; no recuerdo haber visto carriolas o bebés en hombros en festivales antes. Mi única queja real es que a veces la música de un escenario se escuchaba en otro, en una ocasión llevando a Damon Albarn a jalar su sompbrero por encima de sus orejas y a caer de rodillas en frustración. La otra cosas es que meter a más de 100 bandas en tres días lleva a empalmes seguros, obligándote a perderte algunos de los conciertos.
| | The Primavera Sound music festival is, I believe, one of the older festivals in Spain, or at least one of the more established ones (more so in these days when there seems to be one every weekend). Judging by the line-up and the sponsors, this is--as most European summer festivals are--an "indie" festival. (That word has become so contrived.) It's in Barcelona, and the more recent editions have been held at El Parc del Fórum, a seaside park that is probably the best festival location I've been to, a far cry from the usual dusty parking lot with tents. It's ample, easily accessible by inner-city light rail, one of the stages has the Mediterranean right behind it; it was also nice to see that the organizers realize that the number of adults who don't stop listening to contemporary popular music is continuously rising, making it easy fo rthem to come woth their kids to the festicval; I don't remember seeing strollers or babies on shoulders at festivals before. My only real complaint is that sometimes the sound of one of the stages could be heard at another, on one occasion driving Damon Albarn to pull his hat over his head and dropping to his knees in frustration. The other thing is that cramming over 100 bands into three nights leads to inevitable overlaps and prevents your from catching a number of shows.
| Este año fue del 31 de mao al 2 de junio--eso sería las noches de jueves a sábado. La noche de los principales atractivos fue probablemente el jueves. Los Smashing Pumpkins se reunieron y dieron un conciertazo, a pesar de llevar alrededor de siete años sin salir de gira, tocando algunas viejas favoritas y algunas nuevas que en todos los casos parecían prometedoras. (Una cosa algo rara aquí es que el único miembro original además de Billy Corgan es Jimmy Chamberlin, que también estuvo en Zwan con Corgan, así que, ¿qué hace a los Pumpkins los Pumpkins?). White Stripes también combinó canciones de su disco nuevo, Icky Thump con material más viejito y más conocido, y fue también un magnífico concierto. Antes de ellos, Slint también volvió de ultratumba para tocar Spiderland completito, Comets on Fire tocó Blue Cathedral, por un momento vi cómo Fennesz y Mike Patton punzaban los tímpanos de los espectadores, y descubrí a Parenthetical Girls. Me perdí a Herman Düne, The Melvins, Dirty Three, Fujiya & Miyagi, y Justice.
| | This year it was held between May 31st and June 2nd--that would be Thursday thru Saturday nights. The night of main attractions was probably Thursday. The Smashing Pumpkins reunited and put on a great show, despite not having toured in like seven years, playing some old favorites and showcasing some pretty good new songs. (An oddity here is that the only original member in the band besides Billy Corgan is Jimmy Chamberlin, who was also in Zwan with Corgan, so, what makes The Pumpkins The Pumpkins?). The White Stripes also combined songs off their new record, Icky Thump with older, better-known stuff, and were also an amazing show. Before them, Slint also returned from the grave to play Spiderland in its entirety, Comets on Fire played Blue Cathedral, I caught a glimpse of Fennesz and Mike Patton piercing people's eardrums, and discovered Parenthetical Girls. Missed Herman Düne, The Melvins, Dirty Three, Fujiya & Miyagi, and Justice.
| El sábado estuvo algo flojo, pero el hermoso recital de Spiritualizedhizo que valiera la pena. Fue en el Auditori, una increíble sala de conciertos al lado del recinto del Fórum; Jason Spaceman estaba acompañado por su banda, un coro de gospel y un cuarteto de cuerdas, y todo se escuchaba perfecto. Antes pude ver de cerquita a Los Planetas tocando una sesión unplugged en la carpa de MySpace, y más tarde vi casi todo el set de Beirut--que estuvo bien pero no tan bien como esperaba luego de haber caído rendido ante su canción "Mount Wroclai (Idle Days)"--, vi un poco de Modest Mouse, vi todo el concierto de Built to Spill, y cerré la noche bailando a Hot Chip y Luke Slater. (¿Mencioné que habían dos escenarios que sólo tenían a DJs pinchando música para bailar?) Me perdí a Band of Horses, Low, Barry Adamson, Chromeo, Maxïmo Park, y al Sr. Chinarro.
| | Saturday was a bit weak, but Spiritualized's beutiful performance made it worth it. It was in the Auditori, a great concert hall right outside the Fórum grounds; Jason Spaceman was accompanied by his band, a gospel choir and a string quarted and everything sounded just perfect. Earlier I got a close-up of Los Planetas playing an unplugged set at MySpace's tent, later I saw most of Beirut's performance--which was OK but not as great I was hoping after having fell so hard for their song "Mount Wroclai (Idle Days)"--, saw a bit of Modest Mouse, caught all of Built to Spill's show, and closed the night dancing to Hot Chip and Luke Slater. (Did I mention ther were two stages that only had DJs spinning dance tracks?) Missed Band of Horses, Low, Barry Adamson, Chromeo, Maxïmo Park, and Sr. Chinarro.
| El domingo estuvo mejor. Sólo escuché dos o tres temas del disco nuevo de covers de Patti Smith--nunca estuve muy interesado en sus versiones de estudio tampoco--, y de modo similar, sólo escuché dos o tres canciones de Sonic Youth, quienes aparentemente estaban tocando Daydream Nation de principio a fin. Lo sobresaliente de la noche fue Wilco, de cuyo concierto ya he escrito un poco aquí mismo antes. The Good, The Bad and The Queen estuvieron bien, pero bueno, nunca me enganché por completo a su disco tampoco. Fue divertido ver a Architecture in Helsinki tocar mientras aún les iluminaba el sol, y raro escuchar a Buzzcocks conovocar a la anarquía como si fueran adolescentes. The Durutti Column estuvieron geniales, a pesar de apoyarse mucho más en voices de lo que me esperaba. Pelican estuvieron muy bien también; de ellos sólo había escuchado un EP que me prestó Chuy hace unos años, y estaba un poco pesado para mi gusto; ahora parecen haberse desplazado un poco más hacia el sonido de >Explosions in the Sky, tengo que checar su material nuevo. Battles hizo un buen trabajo cerrando los conciertos en directo del festival, cubriendo a Klaxons, que fueron cancelados sin más explicaciones. Me perdí a múm.
| | Sunday was a bit better. I only listened to two or three of Patti Smith's songs off her new covers album--wasn't interested in the studio versions either--, and similarly, I only caught two or three of Sonic Youth's songs, who were apparently playing Daydream Nation in full. The highlight of the night was Wilco, whose performance I've already written a bit about previously here. The Good, The Bad and The Queen were OK, but then again, I never really warmed up to their album. It was fun watching Architecture in Helsinki playing while there was still daylight, and odd listening to Buzzcocks's rants about anarchy as if they were 20-year olds. The Durutti Column was great, despite having a lot more singing going on than I expected. Pelican were also really good; I'd only listened to an EP Chuy lent me a few years back, and it was a little heavy for my taste; they seem to have moved more towards an >Explosions in the Sky-type sound, I have to check out their new stuff. Battles did a good job closing the live part of the festival, covering for Klaxons, who were cancelled without further explanations. Missed múm.
| Of Montreal y unas otras cuantas bandas tocaron el domingo en una sesión más breve, pero a eso ya no fui. En resúmen, fue una buena experiencia, pero espero pasarla mejor más tarde este año en el Summercase y en Benicàssimm. Y creo que jamás volveré a ir a tantos festivales en una misma estación del año.
| | Of Montreal and a few other bands played on Sunday in a briefer session, but I didn't show up for that. All in all, it was a nice experience, but I'm expecting to have a better time later this year at the Summercase and Benicàssimm festivals. And I don't expect to go to so many festivals in a single season ever again.
